A Spanish automobile manufacturer, SEAT, S.A was founded in May 1950 by the Instituto Nacional de Industria (INI), a state-owned industrial holding company. The letters of SEAT stand for Sociedad Espanola de Automoviles de Turismo or the Spanish Touring Car Company, and the first car to be produced was a Seat 1400 model in November 1953.

In October 1948, an alliance contract was formed with the Italian car manufacturer, Fiat, which lasted some 30 years until 1982, followed in 1986 by the purchase and subsequent increase of a majority stake in Seat by the Volkswagen Group. During the 1960s and the next two decades, Seat grew into one of Spain’s biggest automobile manufacturers, producing some of its’ most iconic vehicles, including the 1500, 850 and the 124.

In 1984, Seat released the Ibiza, which was designed as a family friendly high-performance vehicle, which went on to achieve high volume sales. Following a 99 per cent acquisition in 1990 by Volkswagen, the first vehicle to be released under the Volkswagen Group was the Seat Toleda and later, other popular models such as the updated Ibiza, Leon, Altea and Exeo.

Promoted as youthful and forward-looking, with sales of over 16 million by 2006, currently, almost every single model in the current Seat range has a more eco-friendly or “Ecomotive” version, as the company continue to develop cleaner and greener driving technology.
