Brief history ...

Founded by Alexander Wilson in Vauxhall, London in 1857 to manufacture  pumps and marine engines, the first automobile made was in 1903 with a 6HP single cylinder engine, two forward and no reverse gears! Production moved to Luton in 1905, and a new trading name of Vauxhall Motors began in 1907. The instantly recognisable ‘griffin’ logo, which endures to this day, derives from the coat of arms of a 13th century mercenary soldier rewarded with the Manor of Luton for services to King John.

In 1925, Vauxhall Motors was acquired by the US General Motors (GM). A manufacturing plant opened in 1962 at Ellesmere Port, Cheshire to make components to supply Luton, until 1964 onwards, when production of passenger cars such as popular models, the Viva and the Victor, began.

From its’ launch in 1975 until 1978, the Vauxhall Chevette was the UK’s first and best selling 3 door hatchback and saw Vauxhall moving into the modern family hatchback market with the Astra at the end of 1979. As well as the critically acclaimed four cylinder Corsa, Vauxhall's most important model of the 1980s was the Mk2 Cavalier.

By the beginning of the 1990s, Vauxhall was the UK’s second most popular car brand after Ford, the second most popular new car was the Corsa and third best selling car in 2002 was the Astra, the fifth generation of which, was the second best selling car in 2005 and 2006.  A second generation Zafira was the tenth-biggest selling car in 2006.
