Brief history ...

Following the creation of their first passenger car in 1936, the Toyota Motor Company was established by Kiichiro Toyoda in 1937 as a new venture in automobiles, which departed from the original Toyoda family name and business of mass production of the automated loom. A new logo was also developed from the three Japanese letters for "Toyoda" to the preferred eight brush strokes  of "Toyota"- a traditional Japanese ‘lucky’ number!

Post 1945 and throughout the 1950s and 60s, Toyota developed a process of ensuring strict quality control combined with using the most advanced technology available. This led to the production of the Toyota Publica 700 (utilizing a 700cc engine), a small, inexpensive and reliable mass-production car in 1961, which soon made Toyota a pioneer in the marketplace.

The Toyota Corolla - boasting an engine volume increased from 1000cc to 1100cc -  followed in 1966, becoming their most successful model to be sold worldwide. By 1968, Toyota were manufacturing over 1 million cars annually and the Corolla has since gone on to achieve sales totalling over 30 million!

Today, Toyota is the fifth largest company in the world, displacing GM  to became the world's largest automobile maker in 2008. The company has ownership of over half of Daihatsu, part of Fuji Heavy Industries, (which make Subaru cars), Isuzu Motor, and including brands such as Scion and Lexus. In 2009, Toyota officially listed around 70 different models sold under its’ marque, including their pioneering hybrid car, “The Prius” which reached sales of 2.0 million by  August 2009.
