Skoda began as a bicycle and then a motorcycle manufacturing company in Czechoslovakia in 1895, named L & K, after founders Vaclav Laurin and Vaclav Klement. Following the production of their first automobile in 1905, which went on to become the country’s top selling vehicle, L & K merged with Skoda, an arms and heavy goods manufacturer in 1925.

After 1945, Skoda was nationalised and became the only volume car maker in the country, enjoying some forty years of domestic market monopoly. In addition, Skoda was one of the few Eastern European car makers exporting to the West until the late 1980s, although they were often sold at a greatly reduced price than their Western competitors.

With engineering help from Porsche, in 1987 Skoda released the Favorit, a modern-looking front-drive hatchback. Following the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Skoda was privatised and eventually sold to the Volkswagen group two years later. A new generation of Skodas was developed, built to German standards at low Czech production costs, and revamping the Favorit, which became the Felica.

Skoda was successfully transformed into becoming known as probably the best-built European car and the best value for money with new models such as the high performance saloon Octavia vRS, 4 x 4 off roader, the Yeti, and the Superb Estate.
