Brief history ...

Louis Renault and his brothers Marcel and Fernand founded the “Société Renault Frères”  in 1899 and the first Renault car, the Voiturette1CV, was sold to a friend of Louis' father after a test ride on 24 December 1898.

In the modern era, between 1961 and 1992, the Renault 4 was introduced to directly compete against fellow French brand, the Citroën 2CV, followed by a successful Renault 8 and the larger rear-engined Renault 10. The  compact and economical Renault 5 model was launched in 1972, to become a great success, particularly at the time of the 1973 energy crisis.

A series of collaborative ventures was undertaken by Renault in the late 1960s and 1970s across the globe including Eastern Europe and in the US. In the early 1980s, a second-generation Renault 5, the Renault 9 (European Car of the Year) and the Renault 25, the most luxurious version yet, were all released. In 1984, Europe's first multi-purpose vehicle, the Espace, was launched and successful 5 replacement, the Renault Clio rolled out in 1990.

A Renault–Nissan alliance was forged in March 1999  and into the twenty-first century, Renault gained a reputation for distinctive car design and a successful second generation of the Laguna and Mégane. Renault also became known for its car safety with the largest number of models achieving the maximum 5 star rating. A new alliance with Mercedes-Benz parent company, Daimler, was announced by Renault in April 2010, and plans to replace the Renault Smart with a new model based on the Renault Twingo.
