Founded by Professor Ferdinand Porsche as a motor vehicle development and consulting company in 1931 in Stuttgart, one of the first projects the new company received from the German government was to design a “car for the people” - the Volkswagen Beetle - which became one of the most successful car designs of all time.

Post 1945, Ferdinand Porsche's son, Ferry Porsche, built the 356, using components from the Volkswagen Beetle, and regarded by many as the ”first” Porsche simply because it was the first model to be commercially sold.

After success with the Porsche 550 in motor-racing, another air-cooled, rear-engined sports car, the Porsche 911 was launched in 1964, featuring a six-cylinder "boxer" engine, the body shell design led by Ferry Porsche's eldest son, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. Since that time, the 911 has become Porsche's most celebrated and iconic model, although the  current model shares only the basic mechanical concept and styling with the original car.

In late 1996 Porsche launched the first-generation Boxster, the 986, powered by a 2.5 litre flat six-cylinder engine, and the first road vehicle to be originally designed as a roadster since the 550 Spyder. It was followed in 2002, by the introduction of the Cayenne then the Carrera GT in 2004 - the most expensive production model Porsche has built to date.
