Originally founded as a family business to produce sheet steel and tools in 1810, Peugeot began manufacturing coffee, pepper and salt grinders in 1842, followed by umbrella frames, saw blades, steel rods and wire wheels. Eventually, Emile Peugeot applied for the iconic lion trademark on 20 November 1858.

In 1882, Armand Peugeot introduced the "Le Grand Bi" penny-farthing along with a range of other bicycles and the company produced its first automobile- a three-wheeled steam-powered car -  under the Daimler license in 1889. In 1892 Peugeot were the first car manufacturer to fit rubber tyres to a petrol-engined four-wheel car. From 1926, when Peugeot’s 100,000th car rolled off the assembly line to 1965 when the five millionth Peugeot was made, the company now - under the name Peugeot S.A - became France’s second largest producer of passenger cars.

Following the 1976 takeover of Citroën, Peugeot took ownership of the French, UK and Spanish subsidiaries of Chrysler Corporation in 1978, and went on to launch the hugely successful 205 and 206 models in 1983 - of which more than 10 million models have been produced worldwide. PSA Peugeot Citroen is now the second biggest manufacturer of cars operating in Europe.
