Brief history ...

Founded as the DAT Motorcar Company in 1914, Nissan was established in December 1933 to take over the  manufacture of Datsuns from the automobile division of Tobata Casting Co.Ltd., the company name being changed to Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. in June 1934.

Following partnerships with UK motor company Austin in the 1950s and US-based Prince Motor company in the 1960s, Nissan responded to the rapidly increasing numbers of drivers who began turning to high-quality small economy cars at the time of the 1973 oil crisis by building new factories in Mexico, Australia, Taiwan and South Africa to meet the demand.

From 1993 to 2002, Nissan partnered with Ford and in 1999, entered an alliance with Renault S.A. of France and further expansion saw new alliances with both Daimler and Renault in 2010. The launch of electric cars in Europe also began in 2010 with the new Nissan Leaf manufactured at the UK’s Sunderland plant and marketed in North America, Europe, and Japan.
