Brief history ...

An iconic English brand, Jaguar originally began in Blackpool in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company, by Sir William Lyons. In 1927 came the classic Austin 7 - and a move of operations to Coventry. The first Jaguar model, the Jaguar 100, arrived in 1935 and shortly afterwards, Jaguar itself was adopted as the company name.

Jaguar established its’ reputation with the ‘smart set’ in the 1950s with a series of elegantly-styled sports cars and luxury saloons. In 1961, Jaguar introduced what is probably their best known and fondly loved model, the E-type with the S-type following in 1963. Between 1968 and 1973,  almost 100,000 of the popular XJ6 were sold.

Jaguar merged with the British Motor Corporation (BMC) in 1966 and later with Leyland, which had already taken over Rover and Standard Triumph, to become the British Leyland Motor Corporation (BLMC) in 1968. Ford purchased Jaguar in 1989, eventually selling to the Indian TATA Motors in June 2008, along with Jaguar’s own Daimler and Rover.
