Brief history ...
Founded in 1912 by André Citroën - who was of Dutch origin - to manufacture double helical gears (the source of the Citroën logo design), the name Citroën derives from "Limoenman" which, in Dutch means "small lemons man". By 1919, the first Citroën auto - Type A – was produced and at the 1948 Paris Car Show, the iconic 2CV made its’ first appearance to remain in production, almost unchanged until finally being withdrawn in 1990.
During the 1950s, Citroën’s DS range of vehicles were the first European produced cars to feature disc brakes and first to use hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension systems, which later formed the basis for many of Citroën’s most critically acclaimed cars, such as the Xantia, SM, C5, C6 and the XM. Following the 1973 oil crisis, Citroën merged with Peugeot and by May 1976 became PSA Peugeot Citroën.
The C3 Pluriel was launched in 2003 and to celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2009, Citroën re-branded with a new logo, and new slogan, “Creative Technologie” with a special edition of the C3 Picasso. Citroen have recently released the C4 range, featuring e-HDi technology and cruise control.
