AUDI Automobilwerke GmbH was first registered in 1910 by founder August Horch -  the ‘Audi ‘ name, meaning ‘listen’,  derived from the Latin translation for ‘Horch’. In 1932, Audi formed a partnership with the new company insignia showing the union of the four companies involved – Audi, Horch, Wanderer and DJW - as the iconic 4 rings, which are still used by Audi today.

From producing the first European car to feature the combination of a six cylinder engine and front-wheel drive, to becoming the first German car manufacturer to develop the widely popular Audi Type K production car in 1921, Audi grew to be responsible for over a quarter of Germany’s motor vehicle exports by the end of the 1930s. Passing from a major shareholding by Daimler-Benz in 1958 to Volkswagen in 1964, the name was re-launched with the Audi F103.

Outside of the commercial marketplace, Audi produced a series of successful rallying cars, most notably, the Audi Quattro, a turbo charged coupé introduced in 1980, which is still considered one of the most competitive rally cars of all time due to its breakthrough use of four wheel drive. Through the early 1990s, Audi began to shift its target market to compete against other leading German brands model with a choice of four, five, and six-cylinder engines, in Saloon, Coupé and Cabriolet body styles.
